Philodendron genus is native to the New World tropics. This is a large genus with over 350 species. These can be stemless herbs, climbing shrubs, or small trees. The flowers can be white to greenish-yellow, frequently with darker markings. There are seven species now growing in greater North America, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. One of these species, P. scandens has three established subspecies.
